Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) ultrasound scan

Catch potential issues early for peace of mind. A DVT ultrasound is a safe, quick, and non-invasive scan used to check for blood clots in the deep veins of the body- most commonly in the legs, but sometimes in the arms. These clots can be dangerous if they travel to the lungs, so early detection is important. The scan uses sound waves to examine blood flow and spot any blockages or clots.

    Who it's for

    When a scan can help

A DVT scan is the most reliable way to detect blood clots early. It’s often done when there are signs of swelling or pain in a limb or when someone has a higher risk of developing clots due to recent illness, travel, or surgery.

    What it shows

A DVT ultrasound can help detect

    • Blood clots in the deep veins of the legs or arms
    • Reduced or blocked blood flow
    • Signs of vein inflammation (thrombophlebitis)
    • Swelling due to poor circulation
    • Vein compression from surrounding tissue or masses
    • Evidence of past clots or chronic changes in the veins
    • Risk of pulmonary embolism from dislodged clots
    • Differences in vein structure or abnormalities affecting flow

    What to expect

    Your appointment

    1. Before

      No preparation is needed.

    2. During

Your consultant applies a small amount of gel and moves a handheld probe over the area, explaining what they see as they go.

    3. After

You can return to your day straight afterwards. Your consultant explains what they have seen before you leave.

    Your report

Your consultant talks you through what the scan shows while you are still in the room.

A written report follows, usually within 24 hours. If anything needs a closer look, we can arrange MRI, CT, blood tests or a specialist referral.

    Unsure?

Book an initial consultation with one of our consultants for £50. If you go on to have imaging or a procedure, the fee is put towards its cost.

    Frequently asked questions

    Why Have a DVT Scan?

A DVT scan is the most reliable way to detect blood clots early. It’s often done when there are signs of swelling or pain in a limb or when someone has a higher risk of developing clots due to recent illness, travel, or surgery.

When should I seek medical attention for DVT?

Swelling in one leg or arm, especially if it comes on suddenly

Pain or tenderness in your calf, thigh, or upper arm

Red or warm skin over the affected area

A heavy or aching feeling in one limb

A visible change in the colour or size of your leg or arm

Shortness of breath, chest pain, or coughing up blood (seek emergency care-this could be a sign of a clot in the lungs)

    Is it safe?

Ultrasound uses sound waves, not radiation, and has no known side effects. A small amount of gel is applied to the skin and a handheld probe is moved gently over the area. You can return to your day straight afterwards.
