Why would I have a testicular scan?

This scan is used to assess concerns in or around the testicles and scrotum, including pain, swelling, or lumps. It can help identify conditions such as cysts, inflammation, torsion, or cancer, and is the best way to distinguish between harmless and more serious findings.

Symptoms can include:
• A lump or swelling in one or both testicles
• Pain or aching in the scrotum or groin
• Feeling of heaviness or fullness in the scrotum
• Changes in the size or shape of a testicle
• Redness, warmth or tenderness
• Sudden onset of pain (may suggest torsion - seek emergency care)
• History of trauma or infection
• Infertility concerns

Are there any risks with these scans?

Our proactive assessments and testicular scans use ultrasound, which uses sound waves to create images. Our prostate assessment uses MRI, which does not use radiation. Both are considered safe imaging techniques with no known long term risks.

How do the blood tests work?

The blood test is carried out at the same appointment as your ultrasound scan, so everything is completed in one visit. The clinician will ask you a few basic questions and then take some blood from a vein in your arm. We will then send this to the lab for analysis and your results alongside a doctor note will come back in approximately 3 days.

What happens during the scans?

You’ll lie back, and a clear gel will be applied to the area being investigated. The doctor will move a small probe over the area. It’s painless and takes about 10–15 minutes per area.
