Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) screening ultrasound scan

An abdominal aortic aneurysm ultrasound, is a quick and painless scan of your tummy area. If a weak spot forms in the abdominal aortic wall, it can swell like a balloon known as an aneurism. Ultrasound can help assess and address concerns proactively.

    Who it's for

    When a scan can help

The aorta is your body’s largest artery. It carries blood from your heart and runs all the way down through your abdomen, supplying important arteries throughout your body.

    What it shows

    The scan checks for

    • The position and size of any aneurysm
    • Structural changes or abnormalities
    • Inflammation around the abdominal aorta
    • The full length of the abdominal aorta
    • Any findings that could need further follow-up

    Frequently asked questions

Why should I get Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) Screening?

The aorta is your body’s largest artery. It carries blood from your heart and runs all the way down through your abdomen, supplying important arteries throughout your body.

At times, the wall of the aorta can weaken and form a bulge, known as an aneurysm. If left unchecked, this can be life-threatening.

Most abdominal aortic aneurysms don’t cause pain or symptoms, so they can go unnoticed for years.

Our screening scan helps spot these abnormalities early and monitor them before they become a serious risk.

When should I get an AAA scan?

In England, men are routinely offered AAA screening when they turn 65, as this group has the highest risk of developing an abdominal aortic aneurysm. You may also be at higher risk if you:

    1. Have a close relative (parent, sibling, or child) who’s had an AAA
    1. Have high blood pressure

3.Are a smoker or used to smoke

    Is it safe?

Ultrasound uses sound waves, not radiation, and has no known side effects. A small amount of gel is applied to the skin and a handheld probe is moved gently over the area. You can return to your day straight afterwards.
