Pain, bloating or something worrying you in your abdomen and pelvis deserves a clear answer. Our consultant radiologists look at the liver, gallbladder, kidneys, pancreas, spleen and pelvis, and explain what they find.

    What we look for

Organs, lumps and the cause of pain

    • Liver and gallbladder. Fatty change, cirrhosis, masses, cysts, gallstones and inflammation.
    • Kidneys. Stones, cysts, swelling, masses and any blockage of urine flow.
    • Spleen and pancreas. Size, appearance and any lesions, where visible.
    • Abdominal wall. Hernias, cysts, fluid collections and lumps.
    • Pelvic organs. The bladder, womb and ovaries, or the prostate.

    Who reads your scan

    Consultant radiologists

    Your report

Your consultant talks you through what the scan shows while you are still in the room.

A written report follows, usually within 24 hours. If anything needs a closer look, we can arrange MRI, CT, blood tests or a specialist referral.

    Frequently asked questions

Do I need to prepare for an abdominal scan?

Most abdominal scans need fasting for 4 to 6 hours, though water is fine. For a scan that includes the pelvis, arrive with a full bladder. See Preparing for your appointment for details.

    Is it safe?

Ultrasound uses sound waves, not radiation, and has no known side effects. A small amount of gel is applied to the skin and a handheld probe is moved gently over the area. You can return to your day straight afterwards.

    Do I need a referral?

No. You can book directly, and your consultant explains the findings during your appointment.
