Thyroid Ultrasound Scan

A thyroid ultrasound is a quick, safe scan that checks the thyroid gland in your neck. It uses sound waves to produce images of the gland and nearby tissues.

This helps detect lumps, cysts, swelling, or other changes. It’s pain-free and usually takes less than 15 minutes.

£300 (£50 deposit)

You can also add a
Thyroid Health Blood Test for £80 when included with an ultrasound scan.

This scan uses ultrasound to detect:

  • Swelling in the thyroid (goitre)
  • Thyroid nodules
  • Cysts or fluid-filled lumps
  • Signs of inflammation or thyroiditis
  • Signs of cancer, growths or tumours
  • Lumps in nearby lymph nodes

FAQs

Why have a thyroid ultrasound?

You might need a thyroid scan if you have a lump in your neck, changes in your voice, or symptoms of an overactive or underactive thyroid. It can also help monitor existing thyroid conditions or check changes seen on other tests.

What symptoms are linked to thyroid problems?

•       Neck swelling

•       Hoarse voice

•       Tiredness or low energy

•       Feeling too hot or cold

•       Weight changes

•       Fast or slow heartbeat

•       Trouble swallowing

When should I see a doctor about my thyroid?

See your doctor if you notice a lump in your neck, changes in your voice, or any of the symptoms listed above. You may also be recommended to get checked if you have a family history of thyroid disease or cancer.

Are there any risks of a thyroid ultrasound?

No. This scan uses sound waves, not radiation. It’s very safe and has no known side effects. You can return to your usual routine right away.

How does the blood test work?

The blood test is carried out at the same appointment as your ultrasound scan, so everything is completed in one visit. The clinician will ask you a few basic questions and then take some blood from a vein in your arm. We will then send this to the lab for analysis. The time taken for results is specified on the individual blood test pages.
