Foot & Ankle

Pain, swelling, or stiffness in your foot or ankle can affect more than just how you walk, making everyday life difficult.

If simple tasks like standing, walking to the shop, or getting through a workday feel uncomfortable or exhausting, an ultrasound scan provides is an effective, pain-free way to find out what’s wrong.

One side - £300 | Both side - £450 (£50 deposit)

An ultrasound scan is useful for checking soft tissues like tendons, ligaments, and muscles - things that often don’t show up clearly on X-rays.

It helps diagnose common conditions like plantar fasciitis, tendon tears, bursitis, and more. Our specialists use high-resolution ultrasound to provide real-time answers.

During the scan, our doctor will check for:

  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Achilles tendon tears or swelling (tendinopathy)
  • Tendon or ligament injuries, or tendon inflammation (tenosynovitis)
  • Bursitis (around a joint or the heel)
  • Morton’s neuroma / intermetatarsal bursitis
  • Signs of arthritis (osteoarthritis or rheumatological arthritis)
  • Fluid in the joints (effusion and synovitis)
  • Soft tissue swelling or lumps
  • Nerve entrapment or compression

Related Procedures

Steroid injection for arthritis or bursitis - £450

A steroid injection can help reduce pain and inflammation in the joints or tendons of the foot or ankle.
This can lead to improved movement and faster recovery.

Hydrodissection for Achilles tendinopathy - £450

Hydrodissection involves injecting fluid around the Achilles tendon to gently separate it from surrounding tissues. This can release adhesions, reduce pain, and improve tendon mobility.

Morton’s neuroma treatment - £450

A Morton’s neuroma is a painful condition in the ball of the foot caused by an irritated nerve, often felt as sharp pain or the sensation of standing on a pebble. A steroid injection can reduce inflammation around the nerve, relieving pain and improving mobility - often without the need for surgery.

Ganglion cyst aspiration - £450

Ganglion cysts are fluid-filled lumps that commonly develop near joints or tendons, often linked to repetitive movements. A guided aspiration can safely drain the cyst, relieving discomfort and improving mobility.

FAQs

Why have a foot and ankle scan?

If your foot or ankle hurts, feels swollen, or isn’t working like it should, an ultrasound can help. It shows what’s going on inside - clearly and quickly. It’s also useful after an injury or if pain doesn’t go away.

Sometimes further imaging such as MRI is necessary to assess the internal structures of the foot and ankle. However, do not worry, our specialists can decide whether further imaging is necessary and can arrange this for you at the time of the appointment.

What symptoms are linked to foot or ankle problems?

●      Ongoing pain

●      Swelling or puffiness

●      Sharp pain in the heel or sole

●      Clicking or snapping when you move your foot or ankle

●      Numbness or tingling

●      A feeling of weakness or instability

●      A visible lump or bump

●      Pain that gets worse with walking

When should I see a doctor?

If pain or swelling lasts longer than a few days or keeps coming back, get it checked. You should also see a doctor if you can’t walk properly, if symptoms get worse, or if you feel something is not right.

What happens during the scan?

You’ll be asked to lie or sit comfortably. The specialist applies gel to your skin and uses a small handheld probe to check your foot or ankle. It takes around 15 minutes and shouldn’t cause any pain.

Are there any risks of a foot and ankle scan?

There are no risks. Ultrasound is safe and non-invasive. It doesn’t use radiation and has no side effects.
