A DVT ultrasound is a safe, quick, and non-invasive scan used to check for blood clots in the deep veins of the body- most commonly in the legs, but sometimes in the arms. These clots can be dangerous if they travel to the lungs, so early detection is important. The scan uses sound waves to examine blood flow and spot any blockages or clots.

- Blood clots in the deep veins of the legs or arms

Why Have a DVT Scan?
A DVT scan is the most reliable way to detect blood clots early. It’s often done when there are signs of swelling or pain in a limb or when someone has a higher risk of developing clots due to recent illness, travel, or surgery.
What Symptoms Might Prompt a DVT Scan?
You may be referred for a DVT ultrasound if you experience swelling in the leg or arm or pain. Sometimes skin feels warm or appears red in the affected limb. Risk factors include a recent long-haul flight, hospital stay, or surgery, past history of DVT, clotting disorders, cancer, or use of medications that may raise clotting risk.
When should I seek medical attention for DVT?
Swelling in one leg or arm, especially if it comes on suddenly
Pain or tenderness in your calf, thigh, or upper arm
Red or warm skin over the affected area
A heavy or aching feeling in one limb
A visible change in the colour or size of your leg or arm
Shortness of breath, chest pain, or coughing up blood (seek emergency care-this could be a sign of a clot in the lungs)
