FAQs

Why should I have a uterus and ovaries scan?

This scan looks at your uterus and ovaries. It can help find the reason for symptoms like pain, heavy periods, or bleeding after menopause. It’s also used to check known conditions or follow up on earlier scans.

What symptoms are linked to uterus or ovary problems?

●      Heavy or painful periods

●      Irregular bleeding

●      Bloating or swelling

●      Pelvic pain

●      Bleeding after menopause

●      Trouble getting pregnant

When should I see a doctor?

You should see a doctor if you notice any of the symptoms above. Even if your symptoms feel mild, a scan can help rule out more serious issues and give you peace of mind.

Do I need to prepare for the scan?

Yes. You’ll be asked to drink water before the scan so your bladder is full. This helps us see the uterus and ovaries clearly. If a transvaginal scan is also needed, you’ll be asked to empty your bladder just before.

What happens during the scan?

You’ll lie on a couch. The doctor puts clear gel on your lower stomach and moves a small probe to take images. If a closer look is needed, a small internal probe may be used. It’s safe and not usually painful. You can say no to the internal scan at any time.

Are there any risks of a uterus and ovaries ultrasound?

No. Ultrasound is very safe. It uses sound waves, not radiation, and has no known side effects.

How does the blood test work?

The blood test is carried out at the same appointment as your ultrasound scan, so everything is completed in one visit. The clinician will ask you a few basic questions and then take some blood from a vein in your arm. We will then send this to the lab for analysis. The time taken for results is specified on the individual blood test pages.
