A hernia ultrasound is a safe, non-invasive scan used to detect a hernia, especially helpful when a lump is not always visible or felt during a physical exam.
A Hernia Ultrasound can confirm:
- Presence or absence of a hernia
- The size, location, and contents of the hernia
- Hernias that appear only during coughing or straining
- Bowel or fat trapped in the hernia sac

Why Have a Hernia Scan?
Ultrasound helps confirm the presence of a hernia and identify its type, size, and the nature of its contents. It can also assess for complications, such as trapped or twisted bowel (known as strangulation).
What Symptoms Might Prompt a hernia Scan?
A scan may be recommended if you have a lump in your groin or abdomen, discomfort that worsens with lifting or straining, or pain when you cough, stand, or exercise. Some people notice a burning or aching sensation, while others have unexplained abdominal or groin pain. It can also be useful if you have had previous surgery or a weakness in the abdominal wall, or if there is clinical concern about a hernia such as inguinal, femoral, umbilical, incisional, or sports-related.
When should I see my doctor for a hernia?
You should see a doctor if you notice a new lump in your abdomen or groin, or if a previous hernia seems to be returning. Medical advice is also important if the lump grows, becomes painful, or changes in appearance. If you develop nausea, vomiting, or signs of bowel blockage, seek urgent care as this may mean the hernia is strangulated (trapped).
