Why should I get Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) Screening?
The aorta is your body’s largest artery. It carries blood from your heart and runs all the way down through your abdomen, supplying important arteries throughout your body.
At times, the wall of the aorta can weaken and form a bulge, known as an aneurysm. If left unchecked, this can be life-threatening.
Most abdominal aortic aneurysms don’t cause pain or symptoms, so they can go unnoticed for years.

When should I get an AAA scan?
In England, men are routinely offered AAA screening when they turn 65, as this group has the highest risk of developing an abdominal aortic aneurysm. You may also be at higher risk if you:
1. Have a close relative (parent, sibling, or child) who’s had an AAA
2. Have high blood pressure
3 .Are a smoker or used to smoke
What can I expect during the scan?
An AAA scan is quick, easy, and painless. It’s done using ultrasound, much like the type used in pregnancy.
You’ll lie on your back and undress so we can scan your tummy. A clear gel is applied, and a handheld probe is moved gently over the area. This creates real-time images of your aorta on a screen.
